The Background

In 1998 Ireland took the initiative to start an EFNMS working group with the target to identify a set of maintenance KPI’s with clear and accepted definitions. This would make it possible to, especially for small country companies, to compare important figures between European maintenance organizations on an objective basis. It should also provide a platform for benchmarking between companies in the European Market. The first years the group, with the help of Maintenance Mangers from the workgroup member countries, defined 13 especially valuable indicators and their definitions. There was also a project run in the Scandinavian countries based on the 13 KPI’s and a result presented in a report.

A format was later produced for performing workshops to help organizations to understand and start up using the KPI’s. In cooperation with the EN standardization working group the 13 KPI’s were included in the standard that was published 2007(EN standard 15341).

The standardized KPI’s has later been adapted to the workshop format and the work in the committee has changed to support and facilitate the use of the standard. There is also an ongoing effort to support the use of maintenance KPI’s on a global basis that started in 2007. Together with SMRP (Society for Maintenance & Reliability Professionals, USA) we have released a common publication presenting a number of harmonised KPI’s.

More than 20 Benchmarking Workshops have been performed so far. During the Euromaintenance event in Brussels in April 2008 we had the world’s first Harmonised Benchmarking Workshop organised by EMBC and SMRP Best Practice Committee members.

Business Plan

(As shown in Vienna 2008.10.10)

  • 1.1 Providing industry-specific range for the key indicators
  • 1.2 User requirements template for CMMS regarding key indicator calculation
  • User requirement specification for the implementation of a CMMS (Aspect KPI´s and benchmarking).
  • Product in place – first revision will be issued shortly
  • Support ways of providing possibilities for benchmarking processes between members – case + SMRP
  • Offer benchmarking workshops to members according to the EN 15341 standard
  • Provide workshops

Activities

2009 spring Liaison with SMRP on metric/indicators harmonisation and documentation

The updated Business Plan for the EMBC were presented to and accepted by the General Assembly in Vienna at the October meeting 2008.

  • Publication

The major publication from the committee during 2008 was the harmonised indicators. There was also one publication released to support our members when either reconstructing or buying a CMMS in order to produce KPI’s from the system. (User requirement specification for the calculation and presentation of Maintenance Key Performance Indicators according to EN 15341).

  • Harmonisation of KPI’s

EMBC has in 2008 continued the harmonisation effort with the SMRP Metrics. The objective is to document similarities and differences between the SMRP metrics and the EN indicators. In 2007 12 indicators which are similar were harmonised and documented and during 2008 another 8 indicators were done now adding the total to 20 with 7 more in the pipeline.

A publication is available – for information please contact Committee members.

  • The development of the maintenance maturity assessment tool

An effort is ongoing to provide a simple tool for the maintenance managers to find out the status of their work/activities as a start to see areas of possible improvement.

  • The Benchmarking workshop according to EN 15341 indicators

20 workshops have been performed so far. During the Euromaintenance event in Brussels in April 2008 we had the world’s first harmonised benchmarking workshop organised by EMBC and SMRP committee members.
Business terms for the arrangement of these workshops will be published shortly and there will also be a list of approved facilitators to lead/support the events.
